B hramari finished securing his armor, and then Garuda waved me over to a wall filled with various weaponry. âWould you prefer a blade or a blunt weapon?â
I was about to pick out a wicked looking samurai sword, but I pulled my hand back. No matter how well my training had gone, I didnât want to risk slicing through the wrong people in the middle of a fight.
âBlunt.â
He nodded, his feathers twitching in a way that I felt indicated approval. He pulled down two sticks, one black and one red. Both were two feet in length, with a couple inches of intricately carved metal on the handles. As I took them from him, I was pleased with their weight in my hands.
They swung through the air easily, and I could imagine drumming them against the hairy gray beast Iâd seen in the drawing. Garuda then showed me how the metallic ends could be used to screw the two batons together to form a short staff. That would give me an extended reach if I felt I needed it.
I twirled the staff around a bit, and then set it down as I slipped a leather harness on over my t-shirt. It had a small leather cylinder which I could use to carry the staff on my back.
While the others were occupied, I also pulled a couple of small knives from the wall. They had leather sheaths that would clip onto my belt, but for now I just slipped them into a pocket. The inch and a half blades wouldnât be much use in a fight, but if worse came to worst, at least I could inflict some kind of damage before the creature took me out of the fight for good.
âHere,â Gitna said, tossing a long coat to me. It was made of a pale green silky material, and obviously tailored for someone wider in the shoulders than I was. But the reassuring weight of it overrode any fashion concerns. I swung it around and pushed my arms through the sleeves, happy with the way I could move in it. The staff pulled at the collar where it extended past my shoulder, though, so I took some time to switch to a waist harness that would let me slip the two separated batons into loops to hang along both thighs.
There were also handy sewn-in sheaths on the inside of each sleeve for the knives Iâd grabbed. As the others finished their preparations, I practiced pulling my hand in to grab the small handles and draw the knives. They caught on the fabric the first few times, but finally I managed a clean pull.
Bhramari was staring at me with a smirk when I looked up from my short celebration. I slid the knives back into their sheaths, looking away ruefully as she walked over.
âMadame Gitna moves much easier than she did this morning,â she said, the last thing Iâd expected to hear. âI suppose you are to thank for that?â
I coughed and shook my head, feeling embarrassed by her attention.
